How the company was founded

The farm "Smaki Doliny Zielawy" is situated in Dawidy in the Lublin area. It is somewhat more than 12 hectares. It focuses mostly on breeding pigs. The current owners' grandparents and parents had to cope with animal husbandry, which was not at all easy, but over time they started to modernize the farm and increase the herd. Although it currently has 50 sows, there has always been a desire to accomplish more. They care for the animals themselves, keep them in their own kennel, and give them grain they grow themselves. The Farmer's Market started making cold cuts in April 2019. One component was processed each week. Consequently, it was decided to construct a production facility.

What type of company it is

It is a family farm that breeds pigs, which in turn produces and smokes cured meats and sells its own products.

Which open innovation practice are you describing

The owners of the farm several years ago began to implement a farm-to-fork strategy in order to stay abreast of the requirements of the European Union, the Common Agricultural Policy and to meet the demands of customers, who increasingly demand product quality, not quantity. To achieve their goal, Mr. and Mrs. Sobecki have continued to innovate their production year after year, relying not on mass production but on the examples of other farms and productions that are also implementing this strategy. They sell in smaller quantities hams and sausages of their own production, smoked in highly modernized on-site smokehouses, from their own pigs, which are fed from their own grain. All products are thus of the highest quality and thus in high demand. By operating their own company store, which allows them to deliver packages of cured meats by courier the same day, they have grown rapidly and customers are very satisfied.

Why it was successful

: Developing production on a smaller scale has allowed Sobecki to focus on quality, not quantity. Word of their cold cuts, puddings, brawns and other products spread through the grapevine, from referrals from friends and family. Customers quickly became familiar with the quality of the products, which are for this reason extremely healthy.

Who is the target group of the solution

Anyone can order from the Smaki Doliny Zielawa store. You can order packages of meat products for your own needs but also for larger occasions such as holidays, birthdays, weddings, communions or baptisms.

What is the portability of the practice and are there any transversal aspects for application across other sectors

The strategy attempts to increase the sustainability of the European food system in a number of ways. According to consumer responses, the farm-to-fork method has gotten a generally positive reception from the people of EU countries, who have acknowledged its ambition, its objectives, and the complete approach it takes to the food system. After many years of mass production, not only in the food system but also in clothing, accessories, technology and various other productions, consumers increasingly perceive so-called mass production as something of poor quality. E.g. handmade handbags, jewellery or other products are much more valued than those that can be bought in chain stores because they are better and more original.
