How the company was founded

Founded in 1973 as a subsidiary of Sabancı Holding, Kordsa is the world's leading industrial nylon and polyester yarn, tire cord fabric and single cord manufacturer. Kordsa's success story begins in 1973 with Sabancı Holding's factory investment in Izmit for the production of tire cord fabric. Kordsa, which has become the market leader in Turkey over the years, also reaches leadership in world markets with its great knowledge in reinforcement materials and processes, its leading position in the market and its strategic approach in the tire reinforcement sector.

What type of company it is

Kordsa operates as an innovation laboratory for both the global and Turkish markets in the field of tire and construction reinforcement technologies, with its first R&D centre established in Izmit in 2007. Kordsa's second R&D centre is located in the Composite Technologies Centre of Excellence, which brings together R&D, innovation and production in composite reinforcement technologies. This centre, which is rare in the world, conducts basic and applied research, technology and product development, entrepreneurship and production processes. Researchers, designers, engineers, production process managers and employees, doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty members and incubator entrepreneurs work together. With its open innovation approach, Kordsa collaborates with many universities and institutions on projects outside of its area of expertise, and carries out R&D and innovation studies to develop technologies that make a difference and create value.

Which open innovation practice are you describing

Deep technology production in the field of chemistry with environmentally friendly bonding technology

Why it was successful

Before Cokoon, there was no alternative to resorcinol and formaldehyde chemicals for bonding textile reinforcement materials to the surrounding rubber matrix. Replacing resorcinol and formaldehyde with a more environmentally friendly alternative offers advantages not only for the sustainable supply chain, but also for cord fabric manufacturers. It is also useful to underline that employees and end users in tire factories are not harmed by these two substances that change chemically during the vulcanization process. With Cokoon technology, adhesion of textile products to rubber is now possible without these two chemicals, and there is no need to make any changes in technical equipment. Cokoon is an innovative technology in this field.

Who is the target group of the solution

Businesses providing services in the field of textiles and wheels

What is the portability of the practice and are there any transversal aspects for application across other sectors

The developed technology can be used as a bonding technology in all kinds of textile production. The developed technology continues to work with stakeholders to establish a cross link in textile wheel production and to further develop it.
